Newborn Resuscitation Care And Neonatal Care – Kenya

The last training on New Born Resuscitation care and Neonatal care, through partnership with Emergency Triage Assessment and Treatment (ETAT) Instructors and the NNIA were conducted from July to October 2018. Training took place across the country in Nairobi, Mombasa, Kisumu, Meru and Nyeri counties.

The recruitment of participants was done by the regional Nestlé delegates and the turnout was remarkable with all training sessions over attended.

The regional courses were taught by at least three instructors to enable better quality learning through skills and teaching scenarios in practical groups.

Over 160 healthcare workers were trained on how to resuscitate new-borns and how to take good care of small babies. The training included nurses, doctors and clinical officers drawn from major hospitals in the counties involved.

The major hospitals offering new-born and neonatal care were involved and included Kenyatta National Hospital, The Coptic Hospital, The Mombasa Hospital, The Aga Khan Hospital, and The Avenue Hospital, among several others.

The hospitals represented committed to improve the following;

• Keeping babies warm
• Establishing Kangaroo care
• Promoting breastfeeding  
• Promoting hand-washing
• Assessment and early referral of sick new-borns
• Encouraging general hygiene
• Having chlorhexidine  for cord care
• Having CPAP as a standard of care
• Giving vitamin K to all new-borns
• Giving eye prophylaxis to all new-borns
